Leadership Overview Session through VPSCIN (Held on: 15 August 2008)
In “Fast Track Leadership” taster session at Airlie, a number of people from across the public sector got together to share insights and learn a bit about leadership development, using self-managed learning syndicates. Andrew Fenlon, formerly of the Dept of Infrastructure and currently with Primary Industries shared a unique and practical approach to the building of leadership skills. Activities during the session included participants brainstorming a roadmap for “Great Leadership in the VPS”, the resulting behaviours and characteristics that emerged were:
Lively discussion took place around topics including: What is meant by self-managed learning and learning syndicates? Is learning focused on the organisation or the individual, or both? What is the best way to learn about particular topics?
The group spent the last half hour of the session in two distinct learning syndicates, the first around “Reflection” and the second on “Story-telling”. Participants in each shared their knowledge and benefitted from the collective experiences of the group and the supportive “learning syndicate” environment which allowed them to walk away a bit wiser from the brief experience. Andrew also referred to Appreciative Inquiry as a powerful organisational development tool and one that fits nicely with the learning syndicate model. Used with permission from VPSCIN.
